Get a route from a design in MacENC (continue)

Annotations

Draw selection

Since my article 20 November about the subject, the version 7.40 of MacENC provided the opportunity to draw lines on the chart with the tool « Annotation ».

This can now create routes more easily than freehand, creating less of waypoints.

The principle is the same explained in the previous article, the procedure remains the same. (Read more…)

Plan navigation for iNavX with Windows

From your Windows PC, or your Mac OSX, you want to plan, without spending a penny, your future summer boating, create waypoints for places you want to achieve, the passages that you intend to sail through, and then to transfer these waypoints in your iPhone iNavX.

Nothing easier !

A solution exists, without buying software or charts : Google Earth. Follow the guide… (Read more…)

An onboard computer, what for ?

This is the killer question. As much as my answer : nothing !

I explain. In coastal navigation, frankly there's no point to anything. The computer does not contribute to security, does little more easily than standard GPS, does not save time. If we compare the time required to report the GPS fix on a chart (I do not mean to report dead reckoning) time lost in front of computer screen to tweak a lot of unnecessary functions, we soon realize that the computer board is a millstone round the neck. A commendable business attitude

gpsnavxRichard Ray, GPSNavX, MacENC and iNavX, has formally confirmed to the forummacsailing.net forum he had long been practiced :

« When MacENC or GPSNavX is purchased, it can be installed on any Mac owned by the buyer that it wishes. An activation code is required for each computer, just send a request by mail to support gpsnavx@mac.com to get one. We do not believe it is fair to charge for multiple installations or upgrades of software. »

This deserves to be commended !

Question of choice

A reoccurring question comes regularly by email from my visitors : which computer equipment to choose for yachting ? Actually, cope with the dramatic growth of material available for yachtmen, it becomes very difficult to form an opinion. By dint of giving partial answers to each other, often unsatisfactory, I ended up going to the evidence. In fact, choosing a navigation system based primarily on the answer to a question : for what need ?

So I tried to define these needs and to meet each an appropriate solution. This may seem a bit simplistic, but it was mainly the merit of simplicity. I took the opportunity to calculate the current budget of each of the solutions to put forward a criterion that seems fundamental : the Need/Coast ratio. Let's go… (Read more…)

Back on the storm « Xynthia »

Needless to reverse the damage caused on the coast of Vendée and Charente Maritime, the media have made it largely echoed.

I just want me to use this episode to illustrate the severe weather forecast which was made, Saturday 27 February 12 UTC, available in GRIB files on the server Navimail about Meteo France : (Read more…)
