By creating a VNC (Virtual Network Computing) it is possible to control a navigation app as GPSNavX or MacENC from an iPad. This latter becomes an active screen repeater, and offers the possibility, not only view the screen of the Mac (or PC), but also to control the software remotely with the touch screen. This is the solution adopted, this summer, by several participants in the Figaro Race equipped MaxSea Windows.
For Windows PC, I invite you to visit the dedicated (¹). For Mac, implementation is extremely easy.
Mac OS X settings
You first have to build a local WiFi network between the Mac and the iPad (²). This done, open System Preferences OS X, choose item Sharing and check the option "Screen Sharing".
Configure Computer Settings as above by checking boxes and entering a password. If you enabled the firewall in the section Security and System Preferences, disable it, or check that incoming connections are allowed to screen sharing (setting "Advanced").
Implementation of the iPad
Download a VNC app. The one I use, VNC Lite from MochaSoft, is free and easy to set up.
Connect your iPad with WiFi to your Mac, then run VNC Lite. Enter the settings in application settings, click Configure > New ", as below, when finished click "« Connect ".
The ’IP address is that of your Mac network (²). The port is 5900 default. The password is, obviously, that you typed in your Mac's System Preferences, Mac OS X Server activated and Mac keyboard French.
What is the interest ?
If you are user of GPSNavX, you do not have the TCP/IP protocol as with MacENC. This technics therefore allows a simple method to control (partially) and view Mac screen from your iPad.
If, instead, you are MacENC user, it is better to use iNavX and the implemented TCP/IP protocol between these two apps. But if you do not want to buy iNavX and a new chart for iPad, then the VNC connection lets you use the iPad as active repeater, at the helm, while the watch or under deck-house.
The lower keys VNC Lite allows to reveal the keyboard input, setting menu, and control the display full-screen Mac enslaved. Taps his finger on the touch screen to guide the mouse scroll, open the menus, activate the icons on the toolbar, etc.. The control is sketchy, but enough for a remote screen repeater.

A priori, VNC connection allows the display and navigation of any navigation software on the PC. But as the PC mouse is controlled with a simple « loss » on the screen of the iPad, it is better that the icons and / or menus are not too small and too numerous, such as MaxSea
