Build a stand-alone Ad-Hoc network aboard without Mac

iNavX, installed on iPhone/iPod Touch or iPad, can use the NMEA-0183 issued by the navigation instruments via WiFi, instead of using the « Location Services » integrated with the iPhone 3G / 4 or ‘iPad WiFi 3 G (GPS or cellular).

Digi Connect Wi-SP

If we do not want to get a Mac or a PC as NMEA server aboard, but instead just have an iPad or iPhone, an answer exists : call number Digi Connect Wi-SP to create a private LAN (called ad-hoc) iNavX which can connect. You can connect a GPS receiver, AIS or any other navigation instruments to the serial port of the Digi Connect Wi-SP. Its unique serial port accepts RS232 or RS422 input. It will be configured 38400 bps if you connect an AIS, to 4800 bps for any other instrument.

If several instruments are NMEA data transceivers to connect, the best is yet to insert a multiplexer between them and the Digi Connect Wi-SP. Just connect the various instruments to the multiplexer, then connect the RS232 output thereof to Digi Connect. The latter transmit via WiFi the NMEA data to iNavX, set up as TCP/IP client, on iPhone or iPad.

Note that a single device that runs iNavX be connected to DigConnect (iPhone or iPad). It will not be possible to connect a second.

We found this unit price 178 € at MATLOG, and probably in other shops.
