iPhone : a handbearing compass in Augmented Reality

Compass ARNo sooner had posted the article on my favorite apps for iPhone, that the German developer CONVELOP put on the AppStore a free application that immediately attracted me : Compass AR. AR for Augmented Reality.

Yachtsmen my friends, many of you, like me, sometimes continue to get the position using a handbearing compass. And rightly AR Compass turns your iPhone into a handbearing compass. But beware : iPhone 3G only equipped with the GPS and electronic compass.

I can already hear the fussy :

« Why do bearings
since it has a GPS in the iPhone ? »

Well because the GPS can have mood swings at a bad time (read’ related subject), while the compass will not have.

Compass uses the AR visualization in real time by the camera lens on the iPhone, and it coincides with a calibrated compass heading marker that can be used to make bearings. As with the standard built-in compass, you can select true north or magnetic north.

But best of all, is to use more screenshot the iPhone to store the successive bearings value you will need to perform :

Nothing easier : just press simultaneously Home button and button Power / standby to make a screenshot. This is easily achieved by making the bearing since the iPhone takes two hands in landscape mode. You will only have, back to the chart table, to view them in the folder "Pictures" to read your bearings value.

We may love traditional navigation, we always catch up with technology !
