An AIS WiFi transponder iNavX compatible

Several AIS receivers are already available with a WiFi hotspot and TCP/IP protocol, as the excellent Digital Yacht IAIS. Weatherdock AG The German company is the first, my knowledge, to provide an AIS transponder WiFi compatible with applications as iNavX or iRegatta, capable of receiving data via NMEA TCP /IP protocol.

When AIS becomes Virtual Aid to Navigation

The acronym "Vaton" means in English Virtual Aid to Navigation. En Français : Virtual assistance to navigation (¹).
This concept is an extension of AIS. It allows, by means of a spacific AIS transponder located onshore, managed by an administration software, reporting virtually unreported hazard. The position of these hazards is plotted by an AIS target as an appropriate icon. In example, [...]

ADS-B, aviator's AIS

As I have already written, in the word "aircraft" there is "water". It's not a coincidence. So much so that for many years the world of aviation develops a concept similar to the maritime AIS : ADS-B. I also would not be able to say which of the two is the first , it doesn't matter !
As the news about us is a little flat these days – normal [...]

AIS, the second maritime revolution after the GPS

AIS takes a growing place, for two or three years, in the concerns of leisure boaters. Several articles refer to it in this blog, as for equipment as for applications available for our Mac, iPad or iPhone.
Note to neophytes in this subject, or to confirm the knowledge of the most informed of you, it seemed useful to clarify what the AIS means, as has just [...]

iNavX and SiiTech AIS server

iNavX can connect, since version 3.1.7 of October 11 October 2010, AIS data to the server SiiTech I mentioned in a previous post (¹). The benefit of this remains questionable in France because of the low coverage of our coasts. This may change.
Actually, the number of SiiTech ground stations is increasing, the Channel coast are now well covered, and the coast [...]

A test onboard with Navigation Mac

During a weekend of January a little sad, we joined the port of L'Herbaudière, Isle of Noirmoutier, via the picturesque Gois passage at low tide.
We, that is to say, a boating journalist, my wife and myself.
Greeted by two «natural» of the country, Henry and Jean-Etienne. The latter giving us a superb Oceanis 347 for the first test board, in France, navigation applications on a Mac, iPad and iPhone. [...]

Receiving AIS on the Web

For some years websites for viewing marine traffic grew on the web. Two of them caught my attention because they present very different options.

Marine Traffic, AIS Community
Marine Traffic is part of a university project, free and community-based project, devoted to the collection and presentation of data used in several research areas. It provides real-time information free to the public, on the movement [...]

Receive AIS data wirelessly with iNavX

I explained, in a recent post, on receiving NMEA data from instruments on board without going through a Mac (or PC) aboard. It is now possible to do the same for receiving AIS data with an iPad or iPhone.
Digital Yacht has developed a new AIS receiver for use with mobile devices from Apple. iAIS, is its name, WiFi transmits the [...]
